Nascido em 7 de agosto de 1957 em Cabinda, Angola, Nuno Mindelis se apaixonou pela guitarra já aos cinco anos de idade. Aos nove, já estava tocando instrumentos construídos por ele próprio.

Nessa época, já ouvia Otis Redding e sua grande banda, Booker T & the MG’s, composta por Steve Cropper, Donald “Duck” Dunn e Al Jackson. Nuno admira estes músicos até hoje, e reconhece-os como uma influência importante em seu estilo.

1975

Já no Canadá, Nuno juntou-se a um primo mais velho para formar uma banda de blues, tocando em bares locais. Um ano depois, decidiu reunir-se novamente com sua família que havia escolhido um novo país para morar: o Brasil.

1990

Ocorre o primeiro evento importante em sua carreira, quando lança seu primeiro disco solo, “Blues & Derivados”, que passa a ser tocado em rádios de São Paulo, além de receber amplos elogios da crítica.

1991

Gravou seu segundo disco, “Long Distance Blues”, pela gravadora Movieplay. Contou com a participação especial de Larry Mc Cray, ex guitarrista da banda de Gary Moore, e J.J. Milteau, o gaitista mais importante da França e um dos mais importantes da Europa. Este trabalho chamou a atenção da mídia nacional, colocando Nuno como um músico de porte que passou a integrar festivais de blues ao lado de nomes como Robert Cray, Otis Clay, Ronnie Earl, Lonnie Brooks e Bo Didley.

1994

Veio o reconhecimento internacional pela revista “Guitar Player” americana, destacando Nuno numa reportagem sobre o disco “Long Distance Blues. Nela, o então editor Jas Obrecht , uma das maiores autoridades de blues do mundo , compara Nuno a Jimmy Page. Outro destaque ocorre em maio de 1998, quando Mindelis é eleito o “Melhor Guitarrista de Blues” segundo o concurso mundial de aniversário de 30 anos da mesma revista.

1995

Nuno apresentou-se em Austin, Texas, na comemoração do Vigésimo Aniversário da lendária gravadora Antone’s, abrindo para nomes como Junior Wells e Guy Forsite. No mesmo evento, tocaram ainda Clarence Gatemouth Brown e Storyville, entre outros. As manchetes de jornais como “Austin Blues”, alertavam: “A Fera (beast) da América do Sul está chegando!”

Ao final de 1995, Nuno gravou “Texas Bound” (gravadora Eldorado), tendo a seu lado seus novos amigos, Chris Layton e Tommy Shannon, integrantes da Double Trouble, banda de Stevie Ray Vaughan. Com esse disco, Nuno ganha platéias do mundo todo : do Brasil, dos EUA, e da Europa, onde realizou uma série de turnês bem sucedidas , sendo seu disco licenciado no velho continente pela especializada Taxim Records / Alemanha . O disco chegou a ser o décimo segundo em vendas na Bélgica , Holanda e Luxemburgo, dividindo espaço nas prateleiras do gênero com os maiores nomes do planeta nessa área, BB King, Robert Cray , Buddy Guy e outros.

1999 / 2000 / 2003

Nuno lança “Blues On The Outside”, (Trama Music )de novo com a Double Trouble, e sai em turnê de lançamento com a dupla. Mais uma vez, amplamente elogiado pela mídia nacional e internacional. A primeira faixa do disco , The grass is greener, foi a mais tocada em todas as rádios de blues e blues -rock da Internet em 2003, numa auditoria (escuta 24 horas) da “Live 365.” A organização do Festival de Montreal ouviu este disco e em 2001 Nuno foi convidado a participar da edição do 25 aniversário do importantíssimo Montreal International Jazz Festival, bem como em Quebec , Ottawa e outras cidades . O convite repetiu-se em 2004 , com extensão para o Montremblant Blues Festival (e novas apresentações em Quebec , Ottawa ) após o lançamento do seu disco Twelve Hours , (beastmusic/Universal 2003) onde retomou o estilo agressivo , visceral e “ardido” de Texas Bound , deixado temporariamente de lado em Blues on the Outside.

As críticas positivas a Twelve Hours foram tantas que é preferível mencionar apenas uma frase , que encerrava um artigo de uma revista canadense: “Será que o novo rei do Blues é domiciliado no Brasil?” (Andy Grieg, editor Realblues Magazine).

2005/2010

Nuno gravou um projeto inteiramente dedicado ao Brasil, e que é uma guinada em sua carreira, o álbum ” Outros Nunos”(beastmusic/Eldorado) . Nele, Nuno registrou oficialmente pela primeira vez o seu lado poético e literário, dando mais enfoque à composição e à poesia do que à guitarra, e fez parcerias com Zélia Duncan e Rappin’ Hood, acrescentando elementos novos ao seu blues orgânico. Psicodelia, Hip Hop, Eletrônica e até Samba entraram no caldo. O disco recebeu elogios como “Um presente à canção brasileira” (Revista Cult) , “Uma surpresa em larga escala”,(Carta Capital) ,”Um dos discos mais saborosos do ano ” (Estado de São Paulo) e entrou na lista de melhores do ano do crítico Pedro Alexandre Sanches.

Em 2010 grava Free Blues, uma tentativa de oxigenar o gênero aparentemente estagnado pelas mesmas fórmulas levadas à exaustão, na sua opinião. Nele flerta com elementos eletrônicos e gêneros contemporâneos se fundem com os clássicos do blues.O disco recebe críticas bastante positivas,Carol Borrington, da Blues Matters Magazine/Inglaterra escreve : “Neste disco você vai ouvir umas das melhores guitarras da atualidade”

2013

Grava novo disco com produção e participação de Duke Robillard e sua banda, e passa a ser contratado da própria gravadora de Duke Robillard,Duchess Blue-Shinning Stone Group, cujo sócio-proprietário é o blues expert e fundador da Radio Blues International, que transmite e tem ouvintes cadastrados em mais de 120 países.

2018 – Grava Live At The Suwalki Festival / Polônia, captado ao vivo para uma multidão de mais de 20 mil pessoas no prestigiado Suwalki Blues Festival, anunciado junto a lendas como Mavis Staples, Billy Gibbons e Eric Burdon, com as quais (e muitas outras como Blues Brothers, Ginger Baker, Mick Taylor, Canned Heat etc.) divide agora uma calçada da Fama.

2019/2020 – Prepara agora o lançamento do que está sendo considerado o seu melhor album,  Angola Blues, dedicado ao país onde nasceu, com participações estelares de Airto Moreira e Flora Purim.

Nuno é considerado pela crítica e fãs como o principal guitarrista de blues do país. Seus discos são tocados em rádios, bem como na televisão. Os fãs de Eric Clapton o descrevem de acordo com um muro pichado que dizia “Clapton is God”. No Brasil, o muro diz: “Mindelis – Brazil’s Guitar God!”

English Version

Born in Cabinda (Angola) on Aug. 7, 1957, Nuno Mindelis became a guitar enthusiast at the very young age of 5. By the age of 9 he began building and playing self-made guitars.

A primary influence at that time was Otis Redding and his great rhythm section, Booker T. & The MG’s, made up of Booker T., Steve Cropper, Donald “Duck” Dunn, and Al Jackson. Nuno continues to enjoy the work of these musicians to this day.

1975

Because of a civil war, which made Nuno lose everything he had, he was forced to leave his country as an exiled at the age of seventeen. He joined an older cousin in Canada.

He remained there for about a year, jamming where possible and increasing his guitar knowledge. In 1976, following a year of separation from his family, he decided to rejoin them in their newfound home of Brazil.

1990

Nothing eventful happened until 1990, when an independent recording he had made there began to receive airplay on local radio stations. In 1991 he was invited to record his debut solo album, “Blues & Derivados”, which received very positive reviews in Brazilian media.

1991

He records his second solo album, “Long Distance Blues” for “Movieplay Records”, joined by Larry McCray and French harp player J.J. Milteau, considered as the best Harp Player in France and one of the most important in Europe. The album received rave reviews from Brazilian media. As part of his promotional tour for the album, Nuno was fortunate to gain a spot in a blues festival in Sao Paulo featuring Robert Cray, Otis Clay, Ronnie Earl, Lonnie Brooks, and Bo Diddley.

1994

First known recognition by a major American music magazine. “Guitar Player Magazine” profiled Nuno in an issue. In the article, Jas Obrecht (the editor at the time) compared Nuno to Jimmy Page. (“think Jimmy Page I can’t quit you baby”). Further recognition came in their May, 1998 issue, as Nuno was selected as “Best Blues Guitarist” in the 30th Anniversary Guitar Player Magazine Competition
In 1995 Nuno was invited to play at Antone’s 20th Anniversary in Austin, Texas, opening for Guy Forsite, Junior Wells, and others. Clarence Gatemouth Brown and Storyville also performed at this event. The headlines of the Austin Blues newspaper warned of Nuno’s forthcoming visit as “The South American Beast is coming!”.
Later that year Nuno would record his album “Texas Bound”, featuring newly made friends Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm section supreme, “Double Trouble”.With this album Nuno gained audiences in the entire world, from Brasil to the US and Europe. Texas Bound came to be the 12nd top seller in Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg) sharing the shelfs with the world’s biggest blues names ,BB King, Robert Cray , Buddy Guy.

1999 / 2000 / 2003

In 1999 Nuno released “Blues On The Outside”, again with double Trouble, and tours with this superb rhythm section to release the album. Again, rave reviews from the media.Blues on The Outside’s first track (The Grass is greener) was the top chart in all Internet blues radio stations according to Live 365 (24 hours radio monitoring). A canadian promoter and record company executive heard the record and invited Nuno for the 25th edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2001, followed by other presentations in Quebec , Ottawa . He was considered by the critic as the best blues guitar player of the festival and his presentation one of the best of the latest editions of the festival.
Nuno was once again invited in 2004 , after the release of his album Twelve Hours and again played Quebec and Ottawa and also the Montremblant Blues Festival, announced along with Keb Mo, Jimmy Vaughan and others.
The reviews on Twelve Hours were so many and so praising that we may just mention a reviewer’s question in one of them : “Is the new King of the blues a man based in Brazil?” (Andy Grieg,Realblues Magazine – Canada) .

2005

In 2005 , Nuno did an album especially dedicated for Brazil. All the songs were sang in portuguese and Nuno officially showed his poetical skills for the first time, highlighting the songwriting and the fusion with other musical elements (rap,hip hop,even samba) rather than his usual guitar playing. The album received very good reviews from the main newspapers and magazines in Brazil and was considered one of year’s best album by prominent brazilian critic Pedro Alexandre Sanches.

2010 / 2013

In 2010, Nuno released Free Blues, an attempt to modernize the blues language,by fusing some blues and rock songs that had great influence in his music when still a Kid (from Muddy Waters’s All Your Love to Dave Mason’s feeling Alright ) with contemporary elements. Free Blues received good reviews from important newspapers and magazines. Carol Borrington, Blues Matters Magazine-UK wrote: “In this Cd you will find some of the best blues guitaring around” .

In 2013 – Invited to join the cast of great guitar player and producer Duke Robillard and Jesse Finkelstein’s label Duchess Blue / Shinning Stone Records , he records his next album to be released in 2013 in Lakewest studios / Rhode Island with production and participation of Duke in some tracks. Jesse Finkelstein is the founder and producer of Radio Blues International, that broadcasts from the US and reaches subscribed listeners in more than 120 countries.

2018 – Nuno releases the album Live at the Suwalki Festival / Poland, based in his extremely successful  presentation in the prestigious Festival for a 20 thousand people crowd. He is now Hall of Fame (sidewalk) in Suwalki, alongside with legends like The Blues Brothers, Billy Gibbons, Ginger Baker, Canned Heat , Warren Hynes , Mick Taylor and many many others.

2019/2020 – Preparation for the release of what’s being considered his best album ever, Angola Blues, dedicated to his country of origin, with stellar guests Airto Moreira and Flora Purim.   

Nuno is considered by the media and fans of his native Brazil as the best blues guitarist to ever come out of their country. Fans of British guitar legend Eric Clapton identify with graffiti once spray-painted on a London wall; “Clapton is God”. In Brazil the graffiti says “Mindelis – Brazil’s Guitar God!”.
